Shin Bet chief David Zini quietly traveled to the United States for previously undisclosed meetings with his American counterparts in Washington, with the discussions reportedly focusing on sensitive matters.
According to a Channel 13 News report, Zini traveled to Washington as part of a series of professional meetings with U.S. officials. His visit was not announced in advance.
The report said participants in the meetings are “discussing sensitive issues,” but no details were provided about the specific subjects on the agenda or the officials with whom Zini was meeting.
Meanwhile, as Zini conducts talks in the United States, a separate debate is continuing in Israel over security protection for prominent political figures. The public advisory committee responsible for evaluating security arrangements for public officials convened Sunday to consider protection for Yashar chairman Gadi Eisenkot and Democrats chairman Yair Golan.
Contrary to expectations, the committee recommended that Eisenkot continue receiving security protection through the election. No final decision has yet been reached regarding Golan.
Zini’s position is reportedly that neither party leader requires state-provided protection because they do not constitute governmental institutions.
The committee is headed by Ronen Cohen, who has reportedly made numerous critical statements about Eisenkot in the past.
