Simcha Felder: Raising Property Tax – Chutzpah!

Senator Simcha Felder is demanding New York City skip the annual rise in property tax this year. “Considering the health and economic crisis we are facing, it is the height of chutzpah that New York City would increase property taxes during the peak of this pandemic, especially after New Yorkers have been asked to sacrifice so much.”

In a letter sent Friday to Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Corey Johnson, Senator Felder argues against over-burdening homeowners who are struggling under the economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Both our city and state governments have worked to provide much needed relief for renters and tenants. All the while, property owners have mortgages, utilities, taxes and other expenses they continue to accrue. Sadly, it appears that homeowners are continuously overlooked and no help is coming.”

“I strongly believe that if government is asking its citizens to sacrifice for the greater good, we must also be willing to make sacrifices. Freezing property taxes would provide much needed relief to homeowners in need and help many people at a time when they need it most.”

  1. As the mayor has only pleaded in the past: “There is plenty wealth in NYC. Please help me redistribute the wealth.”

Senator Fielder, how DARE you stand in his way in his undertaking this great and noble cause!

Why should homeowners be privileged to own a home anyway? Let them default under the tax burden and join the ranks of the residents of the Armories and homeless shelters.

This is all part of the Honorable Mayor’s “Moment in History” that justified the BLM marches amidst a raging pandemic that shut down our shules for fear if spreading the virus.

Senator Fielder, for goodness sake!! Gett with the program!!!! Don’t you want to join this glorious Moment in History? No?? You don’t????

    You’re hopeless, and deplorable too!!!

  2. He’s right.
We were just notified that our property taxes will be hiked significantly because the value of our house has risen 15% in the last year. This is clearly ludicrous – if anything NYC property values have declined significantly due to the COVID-19 caused exodus by so many former New Yorkers. There is no realistic way to fight or challenge it, either – the government has a long history of under and over-valuing properties as they wish, whether for tax purposes or eminent domain seizures.
