A new study published in The Lancet suggests that chemotherapy together with a stem-cell transplant may be able to entirely halt the development of multiple sclerosis.

The research, which studied 24 patients between 18 and 50 years old from three hospitals in Canada, showed promising signs, the BBC reports. Twenty-three of the patients involved experienced a significant reduction in the disease’s onset. In one of the cases, a person died.

The treatment, while offering hope, also creates “significant risks,” said an MS Society spokeswoman. Read more at BBC News.
