Summer of 2020 Boon for Kosher Sales in Catskills

The summer of 2020 is in full force in New York’s Catskill Mountains as upward of 350,000 kosher adherents are expected to fill every development and bungalow colony. Lines at ShopRite in Monticello in mid-June foretold what is shaping up to be a banner year for kosher food sales.

A major factor for this increase is the ban on sleep away camps and the transformation of these traditional camps to day camps. This has forced many people to rent bungalows so that their children can go to these day camps. Eve was considering leasing an RV to travel to national parks but when her son’s class registered for day camp, he cancelled the plans. Her son would be coming home every evening to sleep in the bungalow she rented, a first for her since she herself was but 12-year-old and joined her parents in a bungalow for the summer.

Summer travel will be one of the casualties of Covid-19 as many people cancelled trips abroad including kosher cruises. Israel is not an option either as the country grapples with a second wave of Covid and is still virtually locked down when it comes to international travel. Many would be travelers to Israel are avoiding the country due to its strict quarantine requirements. Kosher Today

  1. 350,000? is that accurate? with approximately 600,000 orthodox Jews in the whole United States, that would mean almost 60% is in the catskills for the summer. Seems hard to believe.

  2. Such nonsense fake news story. No one made an exception this year and rented a bungalow, where they never did before, just to pay for their son to go to a day camp. So let’s see. They are paying their rent/mortgage in the City, paying rent for their bungalow in the Catskills, and paying for the privilige of going to a day camp in the Catskills. Seriously? I don’t know what rick your sleeping under. Most sleepaway camps are up and running shtiller haight, albeit with some restrictions and shtick. My daughter is in one of them right now. 2 of my boys are in learning camps and yes, the inspectors have come around. Each time a different story was given. Very few sleepaway camps didn’t open at all or turned into day camps. So this article is as fake as can be. No one came up to the Catskills specifically so their kid can go to a day camp.

  3. Heard a story that some inspectors wanted to get into one of the camps to see if guidelines were being followed only to be refused entry on the grounds that no one was allowed in without a covid-19 test. So they got tested and one of them came up positive,
Does anyone know if there is any truth to this story?

  4. “…expected to fill every development and bungalow colony” Otherwise they sit empty?? Doesn’t seem logical…
