Wearing face masks is “very dangerous” when it comes to COVID-19 outbreaks, says Sweden’s top infectious disease expert.
“It is very dangerous to believe face masks would change the game when it comes to COVID-19,” Anders Tegnell, chief epidemiologist at Sweden’s Public Health Agency, told Financial Times.
“Face masks can be a complement to other things when other things are safely in place. But to start with having face masks and then think you can crowd your buses or your shopping malls – that’s definitely a mistake.”
Sweden has been more liberal than other parts of the world with the virus, choosing to keep most schools and businesses open throughout the outbreak. But more than 5,800 Swedes have died since the start of the year – a higher death rate per capita than neighboring countries that took stricter approaches.

The title is terribly inaccurate.

Dangerous to quote this guy out of context. Also remember he prevented a lock down in Sweden which led to a large spike. Further, I suspect that Swedish doctor might have a nefarious pleasure out of losing the weaker members of society…just my speculation there.

FYI Sweden and Finland do have higher AIDS (an immune compromise illness) than many other euro. nations (hint they are very liberal) hence the higher death rate

I have fear, because I have a lot to lose if I get sick, and even more so if I pass this disease to others. On the other hand I am not an agent of Lukashenko and have nothing to gain by not wearing a mask. What about you?
A surgical mask is not intended as protection equipment and should not be relied upon.
A N95 mask or better IS protective equipment and IT WORKS
If you can not find a medical N95 masks (fluid-resistant) as they, understandably, are reserved for health workers at this time, you can get an industrial grade N95 or N99. You can wear a surgical mask on top of it, or a face shield, in order to protect the N95 from splashes. You should also protect your eyes e.g. with lab glasses or face shield.
If you have a beard, or medical conditions such as COPD, you should get a PAPR.
People work every day in biology labs with deadly viruses and don’t get hurt. You won’t get hurt either. Ignore all the noise and take care of your health and life.
The standard surgical masks are not designed to filter viruses.
Warning on box of the standard N95 surgical masks: “THIS PRODUCT IS AN EAR LOOP MASK. THIS PRODUCT IS NOT A RESPIRATOR AND WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY PROTECTION AGAINST COVID-19(CORONAVIRUS) OR OTHER VIRUSES OR CONTAMINANTS.”
And it’s not even to protect others as the virus is 300 microns which means it can get through those N95’s.

Ear loop masks are not approved as respirators in the USA because of difficulty in fitting and hazard in case the loop suddenly breaks, although they are approved as such in many other countries. There exists the option to buy a piece of plastic, available at any Chinese shop for a couple of dimes, that allows to adjust tension and correctly fit earloop masks. However I did not suggest people should buy earloop KN95 Chinese masks. You can buy USA masks, such as 3M, or many others. Let me give the link for everyone’s convenience:

If they filter oxygen and CO2 they surely filter the virus! If they don’t filter the virus, they won’t block oxygen or CO2 either. Make up your mind.

Yes indeed surgical masks are much better than homemade, and the many recent epidemics pushed research into giving the wearer some protection. But the USA doesn’t even have a filtration standard for surgical masks, nor are there tests: the manufacturer is required to declare they are equivalent or better to surgical masks already for sale. An average consumer might not be able to figure out the difference between the countless versions out there. The standards for industrial respirators are easier. There exist also N90, these are also available in youth size “4-12” for the Asian markets – not approved in USA where full face respirator masks are only approved for 18+, but still – and they are a feasible option too.
Bottom-line: anything is better than nothing, surgical is much better than anything, N95 and above, properly used, WILL protect health and life.
