After today’s horrific subway shooting in Brooklyn, NYC Mayor Eric Adams did not dismiss the idea of the MTA installing “something like metal detectors” to prevent people with guns from riding the rails, the NY Post reports. Pressed by CBS New York’s Maurice DuBois on whether detectors like those at stadiums and office buildings could work on the subway, Adams replied, “You are right.
“We found a few ways that it could be used,” the mayor said. “We are going to make sure we do everything within legal means, but we are going to protect New Yorkers.”
City Hall spokesman Maxwell Young later attempted to walk back Hizzoner’s comments. “Just to clarify here, @NYCMayor was talking about using innovative technology to keep the subways safe,” Young tweeted. “He was (of course) not saying we should consider using airport style metal detectors. He’s a frequent rider and obviously knows that’s not practical.”
Oh that’s just great. I hope they make us take off our shoes, belt, laptops, cellphones, watches, everytime we want to enter the train station or get on a bus, just like the TSA makes us do when we want to board a plane.
It’s either that, or screening for certain suspicious individuals, which will immediately be labeled as racist.
