In audio recordings disclosed by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan on Sunday, Shin Bet Head Ronen Bar expressed the war cabinet’s objective to “eliminate Hamas,” likening it to “our Munich,” referencing the tragic 1972 Munich Olympic Games massacre of 11 Israeli athletes.
Bar, addressing the October 7 Hamas terror attack for the first time, stated, “We are already learning our lessons from the events.”
He affirmed a determination to pursue this objective across various locations, stating, “In Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Turkey, Qatar. It will take a few years, but we will be there to do it. Security responsibility is ours. Our duty is to provide both security and a sense of security. Unfortunately, on October 7, we did not succeed in doing that. I think we are on an upward trajectory.”
Regarding ongoing operations, Bar emphasized proactive learning from recent events, transferring insights to different sectors beyond the Gaza Strip. He highlighted the unprecedented scope of threats facing Israel over the past year, with much happening beneath the surface.

Khalil al-Haya, heading Hamas’ media office, and Razi Hamad, another political bureau member, along with about 10 other senior figures, reside in Qatar.
