Three children suffered serious burns Wednesday after coming into contact with fallen high-voltage power lines at Machaneh Shopron in Fallsburg, New York, prompting a major emergency response and their evacuation by helicopter to a trauma center.
The frightening incident occurred at the camp, located along Route 42 in Fallsburg, Sullivan County.
All three children remained conscious following the incident and were airlifted to a trauma center for medical treatment.
The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. as the children, ranging in age from 9 to 13, were playing near a wooded area of the camp.
According to preliminary information, the children came into contact with high-voltage electrical lines carrying approximately 35,000 volts. The lines had apparently fallen during the previous night and had gone unnoticed.
Given the enormous voltage involved, the fact that the children survived the incident was described as nothing short of a miracle.
Dozens of Catskills Hatzalah EMTs and paramedics rushed to the scene, along with other emergency personnel, to treat the injured children and coordinate their evacuation to the hospital.
