Three Jewish brothers became the first American family to have three siblings picked in the first round of the National Hockey League (NHL) Draft.

Luke Hughes, 17, became the third brother in his family to be drafted by the NHL when it was announced last Friday that he would play for the New Jersey Devils during the 2021 NHL Draft live from the Prudential Center. The Canton, Michigan, native and defenseman was the fourth overall pick in Friday’s selection and joins his brother Jack on the team.

Jack, a center, was picked first overall by the Devils in 2019, which made him the first Jewish hockey player to ever be drafted in the number one spot. In 2018, the oldest Hughes brother, Quinn, was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks as the seventh pick.

The Hughes brothers come from parents who were also hockey players. Their mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, who is Jewish, played hockey, soccer and lacrosse at the University of New Hampshire. She also competed for USA and won a silver medal at the 1992 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship. Their father, Jim, was a hockey player for Providence College, an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins and held an office job with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While reading such an article – where the mother is Jewish, but unfortunately married בניהם, with the very sad result of בניך ובנותיך נתונים לעם אחר – leaves me with a tinge of sadness, the opposite is true as well. This is an opportunity where I feel so grateful to the רבנש”ע for giving me the opportunity to learn His Torah and have a strong desire serve Him, in the way the He told me (and all of כ”י) to serve Him. ב”ה that I get to see so, so, so many of our brethren whom their entire life and desires are dedicated just serve him and are truly, truly part of an everlasting נצחיות.

  2. Well, their father is not a Jew, and who knows if their mother is actually a Jew according to halacha. I’ll be surprised if these boys consider themselves Jewish altogether. So, unless you are a fan of intermarriage and assimilation, there’s nothing to be proud of in this situation.

  3. Wow. Okay great. So now we have yiddelach being drafted into all 4 major US sports. We’ve become like all the other nations. We’ve made such strides. There is no difference between us and them. Great, perfect. Moshiach can wait. Let’s make peace and Inter marry with each other. Tikun olam.
Is this the message the frauds at Matzav are trying to convey?

    • Yep. Amazing how Matzav which began with a lot of idealism has turned into such a low spot. Is this what they mean by ‘Jewish world”?? Is thia what they mean by “Torah Jewry”???

They went from being an alternative to the others who falsely claim that title, to being in cahoots with them (see story of ‘awaiting’ wedding) and worse than them, in some ways.
