Tragedy struck on Route 89 near Tzefas in northern Israel today when a bus and a car collided, resulting in the petirah of Dana Ben-Shushan, a dedicated nurse, devoted mother of six, and volunteer EMT.

The collision left Ben-Shushan in critical condition, requiring a challenging extraction from the vehicle. Medical teams from Magen David Adom worked tirelessly at the scene, attempting to resuscitate her. Despite their efforts, they were ultimately forced to declare her dead.

Among the bus’s passengers, six individuals sustained minor injuries and were transported to Ziv Medical Center in Tzefas. Two additional passengers with minor injuries made their way to the hospital independently.

Mohamed Halail, a senior EMT from MDA, described the scene, saying, “Upon arrival, we encountered a devastating accident involving a private car and a bus. The car’s front end was severely damaged, and an unconscious 32-year-old woman was trapped inside. After successfully extricating her, we conducted a thorough medical assessment. Unfortunately, she had suffered critical injuries to multiple organs, and we had no choice but to pronounce her deceased. We provided medical assistance to the six lightly injured bus passengers and arranged for their transfer to the hospital.”

Expressing their profound sorrow, a spokesperson for United Hatzalah shared, “Our grief is immeasurable, akin to the boundless sea. We regretfully inform you that Dana Ben-Shushan, a volunteer EMT from the Galilee branch of United Hatzalah, lost her life this morning in a severe traffic accident near the southern entrance to Tzfat. As she was returning home from her nursing shift at the hospital, tragedy befell her. Dana, a cherished mother of six and a dedicated volunteer, will be deeply missed by our organization. Our thoughts are with her grieving family, including her dear husband, Haim, who also serves as a volunteer for United Hatzalah. We stand alongside them during this painful time, providing support through our administration, emergency response teams, and mental health professionals.”

According to the National Road Safety Authority, today’s incident marks the 201st accident-related fatality in Israel since the beginning of the year. By comparison, during the same period last year, there were 184 fatalities. So far this year, two fatalities have occurred in accidents involving buses, with ten casualties recorded since July 1st alone. Tragically, June was an exceptionally deadly month on the roads, claiming the lives of 39 people.
