Gabbard: Evidence Shows Obama, Team Staged ‘Coup’ Against Trump

Tulsi Gabbard, director of national intelligence, has leveled serious allegations against Barack Obama and prominent national security figures from his administration, accusing them of orchestrating a “treasonous conspiracy” to undermine Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory by falsely attributing it to Russian interference. Gabbard is demanding criminal prosecution for all involved.

She contends that Obama and his top officials “[laid] the groundwork for … a years-long coup” following Trump’s defeat of Hillary Clinton, by fabricating intelligence suggesting Moscow had tampered with the election outcome. Part of that effort, she said, involved reliance on the discredited dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, which officials allegedly used despite knowing it was unreliable.

Gabbard highlighted that the intelligence assessments released after the election contradicted previous evaluations, which had suggested that Russian involvement in the election was unlikely or unsubstantiated.

Calling for accountability in striking terms, Gabbard declared: “The information we are releasing today clearly shows there was a treasonous conspiracy in 2016 committed by officials at the highest level of our government.”

She continued: “Their goal was to subvert the will of the American people and enact what was essentially a years-long coup with the objective of trying to usurp the President from fulfilling the mandate bestowed upon him by the American people.

“No matter how powerful, every person involved in this conspiracy must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, to ensure nothing like this ever happens again. The American people’s faith and trust in our democratic republic and therefore the future of our nation depends on it.”

Gabbard, once a Democratic congresswoman, said she is providing supporting documents to the Department of Justice. These include a partially redacted intelligence assessment created during Obama’s final months in office that outlines cyber threats to the 2016 race, as well as a number of formerly classified memoranda, some originating from James Clapper’s office — Clapper being Obama’s director of national intelligence.

Gabbard named several high-profile figures as allegedly complicit in the scheme, including Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan, then–Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Adviser Susan Rice, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and Obama himself.

This renewed focus on the Russia investigation — which Trump has long denounced as a politically motivated “hoax” — coincides with mounting scrutiny on the unresolved Epstein scandal. The disgraced financier died in custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of trafficking minors.

There has been increasing pressure on the Trump administration from his Maga-aligned supporters to release files related to Epstein, including what is rumored to be a list of powerful individuals connected to the case.

Trump has responded to these demands by alternately denying the existence of such records or asserting that they were fabricated by Obama’s allies, including James Comey, who directed the FBI under Obama, and Joe Biden, who was vice president at the time.

Gabbard’s office also released Obama-era memos alongside commentary steeped in the language and tone often associated with Trump and his core supporters. These documents purport to expose what they describe as a coordinated plan to delegitimize Trump’s 2016 win.

One of the documents, labeled “The Russia Hoax,” claims that following a December 9, 2016 meeting of Obama’s top national security officials, “Deep State officials in the IC [intelligence community] begin leaking blatantly false intelligence to the Washington Post … claiming that Russia used ‘cyber means’ to influence ‘the outcome of the election.’”

It further asserts that “Later that evening, another leak to the Washington Post falsely alleges that the CIA ‘concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened’ in the election to help President Trump.”

The document alleges that on January 6, 2017, “The Obama administration shares the unclassified ICA [intelligence community assessment] with the public. It falsely alleges, based in part on ‘further information’ that had ‘come to light’ since the election, that Putin directed an effort to help President Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. This ‘further information’ is later confirmed to be the Steele dossier.”

Gabbard’s release contends that this narrative deliberately excluded earlier intelligence findings which suggested that Russia neither intended nor had the capability to alter the outcome of the election.

The Steele dossier, which contained explosive claims of Russian “kompromat” on Trump, became a key element in Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling. Mueller’s final report concluded that Russia carried out widespread efforts to interfere in the 2016 race, but “did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated” with Moscow.

Gabbard’s appointment as director of national intelligence stirred controversy from the outset. Critics pointed to her lack of intelligence experience — she had not served on any related congressional committee — as well as her past comments defending Russian President Vladimir Putin and echoing Kremlin narratives, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine.
