U.S. to Cap Refugee Admissions at 45,000 Annually

The Trump administration is reducing overall annual refugee admissions to the United States, allowing, at most, 45,000 to be admitted next year. Officials said the State Department recommended 50,000, while the Department of Homeland Security wanted the number to be 40,000. The cap hasn’t been this low since 2006, when around 41,000 refugees were admitted.

In contrast, during the last year of the Obama administration, the U.S. allowed nearly 85,000 refugees to enter the country. Trump campaigned on a strict immigration crackdown, and often said he wanted to limit refugee admissions. Read more.
