Uman For Rosh Hashanah? Rav Shalom Arush Meets to Discuss the Possibilities

The announcement by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel, Yevgeny Korinchuk, that in light of the war in Ukraine, it may not be possible for tens of thousands of Breslover Chassidim and others to enter the country for Rosh Hashanah caused consternation amongst some in the Jewish world.

Against the background of this announcement, last night, Rabbi Pinchas Salzman, the Chief Rabbi of Moldova, met with Rav Shalom Arush, one of the well know Breslover Chassidim and head of Chut Shel Chesed. The discussion dealt with coming up with a solution that would allow thousands to celebrate Rosh Hashanah in the vicinity of the kever of Rav Nachman of Breslov.

In a meeting attended by David Hellman, a member of the Moldovan Jewish community and former Moldova airport manager, the rabbonim discussed ways to go to Uman with prior approval and coordination with the responsible parties, and to prevent difficulties for travelers. Rabbi Salzman presented the Jewish community’s arrangements in Chisinau for the absorption of thousands of Chassidim at Moldova International Airport, and for assisting in reaching Uman in Ukraine.

The diplomatic activity carried out by the heads of the Jewish community in Kishinev, led by Rabbi Salzman, includes direct contact with Ukrainian and Moldavian military and security personnel in order to obtain entry permits. In addition, as part of his activities, Rabbi Salzman is in contact with the various airlines and travel agencies that provide arrival services. As part of the cooperation between the Jewish community of Moldova and the travel agencies designated for Uman, Chassidim will be offered travel routes to Uman that will pass through the town of Rashkov for davening at the site of the kever of mekubal Rav Shabtai of Rashkov, which was discovered in recent months.
