The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has responded to a letter penned by eight Nobel Prize laureates regarding the ongoing hostage crisis. This letter was initially dispatched on the 100th day of the crisis, which commenced on October 7. It has now been 79 days since the laureates’ initial correspondence was dispatched.

In their missive, the Nobel laureates implored Guterres to take action for the immediate liberation of the hostages and to ensure adequate medical attention for all individuals held captive. Furthermore, they extended an invitation for Guterres to visit Israel and the neighboring communities near Gaza, aiming for him to witness firsthand the devastation and atrocities perpetrated by Hamas terrorists. They also suggested meeting with families of the hostages and individuals who have survived captivity.

Among the signatories were esteemed figures such as Aaron Ciechanover, MD, DSc, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004; Dan Shechtman, PhD, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2011; Ada Yonath, PhD, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009; and Daniel Kahneman, PhD, Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2002. It’s noteworthy that Daniel Kahneman passed away on March 27th, subsequent to the dispatch of the letter.

Responding to the concerns raised, Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized, “Nothing can justify the torture, killing, maiming, and abduction of civilians, the use of sexual violence, nor the launching of rockets towards civilian targets. The mental health consequences will endure for a long time to come. Please rest assured that our efforts will not abate until all hostages are released and until their whereabouts are known.”
