A statement from an Israeli official on Sunday evening revealed that Israel has consented to release 700 incarcerated terrorists within Israel in exchange for the liberation of 40 hostages currently held by Hamas in Gaza.
According to analyst Barak Ravid, among the 700 terrorists slated for release, approximately 100 are serving life sentences for their involvement in serious terrorist activities.
Previously, Israel had turned down a similar proposition presented by Qatari mediators a few weeks ago. At that time, Hamas was pressing for a significantly higher number of terrorists serving life terms in Israeli prisons.
Reports also indicate that Israel’s agreement was influenced by pressure from the head of the CIA during discussions held in Qatar over the weekend.
Additionally, the official stated that Israel has agreed to entertain a proposal from the United States, which involves permitting Gazans to return to northern Gaza following the release of the hostages.
