United States President Joe Biden said the US is committed to aiding in Taiwan’s defense on Thursday, though a White House spokesperson later announced his remarks do not signal any policy changes.
An attendee at a CNN town hall asked Biden if the US would defend Taiwan, and the president replied “yes, we have a commitment to do that.”
The leader’s direct statement seemed to contrast with the longtime US “strategic ambiguity policy” towards Taiwan, with Washington historically navigating around outright statements on potential military intervention operations, according to CNN.
However, a White House representative later clarified that Biden’s response “was not announcing any change in our policy and there is no change in our policy.”
“The U.S. defense relationship with Taiwan is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act,” the official continued.
“We will uphold our commitment under the Act, we will continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense, and we will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo.”

The so-called “China” that rules the geographic mainland, called the “Peoples Republic of China,” is not legitimate at all. It was formed in 1949 when a bunch of Chinese Communists rebelled against the legitimate Chinese government, known as the “Nationalists,” and eventually conquered the whole mainland area, forcing the Nationalists to flee to this large island east of the mainland. The Nationalists thus continued there on the island the legitimate Chinese country, called the “Republic of China”; they control the Taiwan island plus a few very tiny islands located right next to the mainland coast.
The Chinese communists are severely furious that the Nationalists were able to flee and continue on with their country on this Taiwan island and have continually threatened to take it over by military force. Especially through this last year, they have increased their threats to the Nationalists and have even many times brazenly flown their warplanes over the island’s airspace.
In general, the Chinese Communists are severely wicked people, who, through the 72 years since their 1949 take over, have cruelly murdered many, many tens of millions of their own Chinese people.
