US Vice President Kamala Harris, during an interview with ABC News on Sunday, conveyed that she wouldn’t dismiss the possibility of “consequences” if Israel were to undertake a military operation in Rafah.
Israeli authorities have been emphatic about the necessity of neutralizing the Hamas factions entrenched in Rafah to secure a decisive victory.
When questioned about her opinion on whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu poses a hindrance to peace, Harris avoided a direct response, emphasizing instead the need for the US to uphold what it perceives as priorities in the Gaza conflict. She reiterated concerns over the significant number of innocent Palestinian casualties, stating, “We’ve been very clear that far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”
Later, when Harris was probed about the potential scenario of Netanyahu disregarding US President Joe Biden’s caution regarding a Rafah operation, she highlighted the administration’s consistent stance. She remarked, “We have been clear in multiple conversations and in every way that any major military operation in Rafah would be a huge mistake… We’ve been very clear that it would be a mistake to move into Rafah with any type of military operation.”
When pressed further about the possibility of repercussions from the United States, Harris maintained, “I am ruling out nothing,” in her response to ABC News.
