A major fire has broken out at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan today, sending thick black smoke billowing over the city and shutting down traffic in the area.
The hospital is located at First Avenue and East 30th Street.
The cause of the fire is not clear at this time.
Emergency crews have responded.
WPIX 11 and NBC report that flames were reported on the fifth floor of the medical center in an area that is under construction, but that the hospital is not being evacuated as of 12:30 p.m. and the fire is not deemed a threat to patients.
