The man accused of going on a stabbing rampage in Monsey is “not a terrorist” — he’s just mentally ill — family friends claimed Sunday in an apparent response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s statements earlier in the day that the attack was an “act of domestic terrorism.”

Grafton Thomas — who is accused of storming into Rav Leibish Rottenberg’s home in Monsey on Motzoei Shabbos Chanukah and wounding five people with a machete — is “not a violent person,” according to his pastor of 10 years, Reverend Wendy Paige of the Hudson Highlands Cooperative Parish. “Grafton is not a terrorist, he is a man who has mental illness in America and the systems that be have not served him well,” Paige said. “I have been his pastor for a long time and I have seen him, he is not a violent person, he is a confused person.”

Thomas, 38, has suffered from mental illness for more than 20 years and has been in and out of hospitals for treatment, according to Paige, who did not say what condition he had been diagnosed with or what medications he’d been prescribed.

A friend of the mom, Taleea Collins, said outside the home that Thomas is “a lovely person. Grafton has always been a loving, loving man towards me. He calls me ‘auntie’ sometimes,” she claimed. “He’s just a lovely person. I’ve never seen him be violent and I know that he suffers from mental illnesses. He’s not a terrorist he’s a loving loving man, with a lot of creativity and just a wonderful spirit,” Collins added. Read more at the NY Post.

  1. Then he belongs in the mentally deranged section of the prison..
Now is the test to see if New York has our back.. They dare buy into this garbage

  2. There’s absolutely no question that he is mentally ill. How else can someone have so much hate and anger within him! Unless he’s just a miscreant animal. He should be shot dead at point blank while looking right into the gun barrel.

  3. it doesn’t really matter what he is. it makes zero difference. we have to wake up and realize that all is from Hashem and no one can harm anyone without Hashem’s decree. We have no power to prevent something that Hashem has decreed.

  4. deranged, loving, creative, but knew to target the jews and the rabbis home.
he didn’t choose to sledge away in the Church, or his mother or family member or any other place of diverse people.
I would investigate this Pastor too, he might be deranged too .

  5. He became mentally ill after all that stabbing, otherwise his family and friends would have seen to it that he was in a mental asylum and not allowed out of hospitals. Now he should get his medications in prison for the rest of his life.

  6. A volunteer member of a security team who is running for county commissioner is being hailed for saving lives by quickly ending a shooting Sunday at a North Texas church.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton described parishioner Jack Wilson as a reserve deputy with extensive training who has taught shooting at his own range.

Wilson was one of two congregants who confronted a gunman during an attack that killed two people at West Freeway Church of in White Settlement, a town of about 17,000 people near Fort Worth. Paxton said Wilson was the one who brought down the suspect with a single shot.

  7. After having researched mental illness, including Dr. William Glasser’s overlooked success with curing mental illness, plus hearing from a friend who ran a mental hospital…people don’t realize that mentally ill people often have more control over their behavior than anyone likes to admit. (You can also see this in their behavior on the street.)

Maybe not perfect control and they’re not always consciously manipulating situations, but they also often aren’t as helpless as they seem.

Also, a great deal of wonky (including homicidal or suicidal) behavior is actually CAUSED by the medication they take. These side effects are listed in the insert.

(You see that treatment does not work as it clearly states that the horrible attacker has been in and out of mental hospitals for 20 years.)

Mental illness needs to stop being used as an excuse for crime.

It’s just another feel-good technique for onlookers who want to avoid more complex (yet authentic) solutions, and who want to avoid being seen as judgemental or unsympathetic.
