Due to a workforce scarcity, several healthcare organizations and federal contractors are momentarily easing their criteria. Vaccination obligations for employees against COVID-19 are being suspended by a rising number of health care institutions and other businesses.
The requirements are being stopped at a critical juncture in history. Even though COVID-19 cases are on the rise and the highly modified omicron version is spreading, many companies are facing labor shortages. Hospitals were already short on nurses and other professionals before the outbreak, and now, maintaining enough staffing has become even more difficult—burnout has made the shortages worse.
What This Means for Employees
Several experts claim that the mass exodus of employees combined with the burnout of healthcare workers has indeed influenced some healthcare institutions’ decisions to overturn vaccine mandates. Most companies don’t have the privilege of losing 5% or 10% or whatever percentage of their employees that refuse to get vaccinated. It is becoming increasingly difficult in this day and age, especially in occupations like healthcare or other areas where labor is scarce. Despite implementing flexibility on mandates, many companies continue to urge their employees to get vaccinated.
How This Has Influenced Companies’ Decisions
A number of institutions have made the tough decision of suspending vaccine mandates. One of them is HCA Healthcare Inc., which operates 183 hospitals across 20 U.S. states. However, it also advised staff to be vaccinated, calling it an essential step for every employee’s health. Amtrak followed suit—after a court granted a national injunction against a requirement for federal contractors, Amtrak also suspended requirements. General Electric has also jumped on the bandwagon.
The CEO of Amtrak highlighted that only 500 active Amtrak employees have not been vaccinated, meaning 95.7% of employees are immunized. Moreover, he emphasized that when taking into consideration the employees that have taken the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the number increases to 97.3%
How Experts Are Reacting to Suspending Vaccine Mandates
This decision has been criticized by many, especially healthcare workers, calling it an absurd move. Assistant professor of medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine Dr. Sadiya Khan chastised companies for relaxing their regulations, especially since the number of COVID-19 cases has risen across the world. Moreover, Khan condemned that pulling away from safety and efficiency is ludicrous.
