Health care workers who came to New York to help with the country’s most severe coronavirus outbreak will have to pay state taxes, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, reports News Channel 5.

Cuomo addressed the issue at a news conference.

“We’re not in a position to provide any subsidies right now because we have a $13 billion deficit,” Cuomo said. “So there’s a lot of good things I’d like to do, and if we get federal funding, we can do, but it would be irresponsible for me to sit here looking at a $13 billion deficit and say I’m gonna spend more money when I can’t even pay the essential services.”

Medical professionals who came to New York at the state’s request will be required to pay state taxes — even if an employer in their home state paid them for their time in New York.

“If we don’t get more money from Washington, we can’t fund schools, right, so at the rate, we want to fund them. We are in dire financial need,” he said. Read more: News Channel 5

  1. The headline doesn’t seem correct.

NYS isn’t taxing volunteers. They are taxing people who were PAID to work in NYS on a volunteer basis. Meaning they had jobs elsewhere but volunteered to work in NYS due to the Pandemic.

If those people wouldn’t be paying NYS they would be paying them to their home state . (Almost all states give a tax credit on money earned and taxed out of state) So its not like Cuomo , for all his faults, is taking advantage of volunteers.

  2. This evil man needs a different career. No one ever wins with an ingrate. No wonder the Feds are apprehensive about giving him more money.

  3. The mental deficit that is the mind of these ganevishe chevrah is must more costly than the couple of $$ the State is collecting to keep pork projects alive. I think, not sarcastically, that we should lay off the Assembly and State Senate as they have proven to be particularly worthless and use that saved money instead of taxing the volunteers.

  4. The “work” they did in NY State, was volunteer work, for free.
There is nothing no income tax.
The fact that their regular employer happened to give them a gift, is immaterial to NY State.
