Co-founder and chairman of the ZAKA volunteer emergency response organization Yehuda Meshi-Zahav passed away today at the geriatric-psychiatric Herzog Hospital in Yerushalayim. He was 62 years old.

Meshi-Zahav was found unconscious at his home in the Yerushalayim suburb of Givat Ze’ev. He was rushed to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in critical condition, and remained unconscious until his passing today.

ZAKA is perceived by many as an organization that bridged the gaps between the religious and secular sectors.

Meshi-Zahav was an intended recipient of the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement. He later gave up the Israel Prize and stepped down as the head of ZAKA.

He leaves behind his wife and seven children.
