Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has drawn a comparison between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the incursion by the Hamas militant group into Israel. He stressed the importance of abiding by international laws and principles to maintain global peace.
“The same evil, and the only difference is that there is a terrorist organization that attacked Israel, and here is a terrorist state that attacked Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said in a video address Monday to a NATO parliamentary assembly in Copenhagen. “Our unity must and can stop the evil,” Zelenskyy said. “Let everyone who sponsors terror feel the power of our wrath. And let everyone who needs help defending themselves against terror feel the power of our solidarity.”
Zelenskyy claimed that Iran is behind both conflicts.
“The intentions declared are different, but the essence is the same,” Zelenskyy said.
Iran has denied it has supplied Russia with Shahed kamikaze drones for use in Ukraine and has said it is not involved in the weekend’s attacks on Israel. Ukraine said about 1,000 Iranian-designed Shahed drone were used by Russia over the past six months. “Iran can’t say it has nothing to do with what is going on in Ukraine if it sells Shaheds (drones) to Russia. Iran can’t say it has nothing to do with what is going on in Israel, if its officials claim the support of what is going on in Israel,” Zelenskyy said.
Despite Secretary of State Antony Blinken stating that there is no evidence linking Iran to the recent attacks on Israel, he acknowledged the long-standing ties between Tehran and Hamas.
Zelenskyy called for Western nations to stand united in the face of global challenges. He emphasized that this is not the time to retreat into internal disputes or isolate oneself but rather to actively engage in the international arena. Zelenskyy underscored that terrorism on one continent has far-reaching implications for global affairs and should not be ignored.
