Improvement in Condition of Chacham Ovadia Yosef

Chacham Ovadia Yosef, head of Shas’ Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah, spent Rosh Hashanah and Shabbos Parshas Haazinu at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

Rav Yosef was taken to the hospital earlier last week after he felt intensifying of pains that he has been suffering from since he tripped in his home two months ago.

Doctors decided on Erev Yom Tov that, despite an improvement in his condition, Rav Yosef would remain at Hadassah Ein Kerem and continue receiving medical treatment there.

Chacham Ovadiah received antibiotics intravenously and underwent a series of comprehensive tests.

On Erev Yom Tov, Chacham Ovadiah spoke on the phone with Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau, who told him that all of Klal Yisroel is davening for his recovery. Chacham Ovadiah also spoke to the Belzer Rebbe, who wished him a refuah sheleimah and a shanah tovah.

On Rosh Hashanah, Chacham Ovadiah participated in a small minyan held in his room, with the participation of Shas MK Ariel Atias and others. Shas MK Aryeh Deri served as the baal tokeia for tekias shofar.

Last night, Chacham Ovadiah’s weekly Motzoei Shabbos shiur was delivered in his stead by his son, Rav Yitzchak Yosef, Sefardic Chief Rabbi of Israel.

Doctors at Hadassah say that they have seen marked improvement in Chacham Ovadiah’s overall condition and will decide today if and when he can return to his home in Har Nof.

Chacham Ovadia, one of the most brilliant Torah minds of our day, will, be’ezras Hashem, turn 93 on 11 Tishrei next week. He is a former Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel and currently serves as the spiritual leader of the Shas political party in the Knesset.

All are asked to continue davening for Rav Ovadiah ben Georgia l’refuah shleimah.
