In a project initiated by Shas Moetzes member Rav Shimon Baadani, the Israel Electric Company announced willingness to employ non-Jews in electricity plants on Shabbos and to utilize generators if 500,000 people signed a request for kosher Shabbos electricity by the end of last week.
In 2011, public pressure forced then-Energy Minister Uzi Landau to recall a kosher electricity bill aiming at placing Shabbos electricity production under Rabbinate supervision. His ministry explained that such a law might contravene Israel’s religious status quo.
