Kelly to De Blasio: NYPD Cops Are ‘Phenomenal,’ Not Lazy


kellyLast week, Democratic mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio agreed with actor Alec Baldwin that the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy is “lazy.” On Monday, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly used the criticism as an opportunity to tout the police force coming off a week that saw no homicides in the city.

The murder-free streak “is emblematic of how safe this city has become and what a great job the New York City police officers are doing,” Kelly told reporters, including WCBS 880′s Rich Lamb. “Although some people think they may be lazy, I think they’re doing a phenomenal job.”

Kelly said having a week without any murders is “certainly unsual in a city of 8.4 million people.” He noted that in 1990, the city had 2,245 murders – an average of more than six killings a day.
