un-united-nationsAfter an intensive one-year campaign waged by Israel’s U.N. delegation, Professor Yuval Shany has been chosen to serve on the U.N. Human Rights Committee.

Shany, 43, becomes only the second Israeli jurist in history to have been appointed to the prestigious committee. The first was Professor Dan Kretzmer in 1995.

Shany, an international law expert, is dean of the Faculty of Law at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Shany was appointed to the committee with the supporting votes of 112 countries.

“The election of Professor Shany is an achievement for the U.N. mission and a reason for national pride,” said Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Ron Prosor.

“It is a testament to the high esteem held for Israel and is proof that with hard work we can achieve impressive results, despite difficult starting conditions,” he said.
