Teens Switching to E-Cigarettes

Older teens may be giving up traditional cigarettes, but they’re not ditching smoking. A report to be released by the National Institutes of Health on Tuesday reveals that more teens smoke e-cigarettes than regular ones. In fact, the percentage of older teens who don’t smoke regular cigarettes has continued to drop.

The report found that 9 percent of all eighth graders had tried e-cigarettes, compared to 4 percent who tried regular ones.

By tenth grade, 16 percent had tried e-cigarettes, compared to 7 percent who had ever smoked regular ones. By senior year of high school, 17 percent had smoked an e-cigarette, while 14 percent had puffed the regular ones.

“I worry that the tremendous progress that we’ve made over the last almost two decades in smoking could be reversed on us by the introduction of e-cigarettes,” said University of Michigan Professor Lloyd Johnston, who leads the annual smoking-monitoring survey. Read more.
