Airlines Could Start Weighing Passengers Before Boarding

In a measure that will likely irk flyers, airlines could soon require plus-sized passengers to step on the scale — or provide their weight — before boarding the aircraft.

The initiative, which was outlined in a recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory, strives to provide new data on average passenger weights as the current numbers reportedly don’t reflect today’s sky-high obesity rates in the US. In turn, this would help ensure aircrafts, especially the small ones, don’t exceed their allowable weight limit, View From the Wing reported.

To put it plane-ly, the FAA wants to gauge how much fatter Americans have gotten, to prevent things from coming apart when planes take to the skies.

The new mandates, which were reviewed by airline industry publication AirInsight Group, would require airlines to take surveys to establish “standard average passenger weights” for crew members, baggage and passengers via random selection.

  1. R’ Fishel Schachter muses (about himself?)
Once was flying to Montreal (from NY) on one of these single-digit-passenger planes, pilot requests that he sit on the other side to distribute the weight more evenly.
Thinks to himself, “Oh, no! I shouldn’t have eaten that 2nd piece of cake this morning”

  2. I guess I’ll watch how much I eat before I get on the plane, but after they weigh me and after I board the plane, I’m gonna eat as much peanuts and pretzels as I want. Let them try and stop me! I’ll show them!

  3. This will possibly happen, until a BBW from some inner city yells discrimination, and once that fat lady sings, it will be over.

  4. New boarding trend: weigh the passenger, take his temperature, blood pressure and heart rate.

Since 60% of the shots were placebo (esp in Israel), they will have to do a manual check with magnets to see if they stick on their body as proof that they were vaccinated.

  5. I fear the pesach hotels are going to try this also. Weigh you on the way in and on the way out. Implement a surcharge for those that have an increase.

  6. I’ve been preaching that they should do this for years. Passengers and their luggage should be weighed to get a full weight , not just weighing the luggage

    • When you say luggage, are you including emotional baggage? If yes, every plane would sink or crash! Yikes.
