Democrat New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez easily won a second term to the House of Representatives Tuesday night, outpolling Republican challenger John Cummings by a more than two-to-one margin.
The self-described socialist who was a vocal supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders in the race for the Democrat nomination for president and a member of the so-called “squad” of liberal first-term Democrats, received more than 68% of the vote to Cummings’ just under 31% with more than 83% of the vote reported.
Ocasio-Cortez, 31, represents New York’s 14th Congressional District comprising of the Bronx and Queens boroughs of New York City, which has elected only two Republicans, for a total of 10 years, since 1927.
She joins other members of the squad, Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, in being reelected.
