Noam Party chairman MK Avi Maoz is calling for expanded Chareidi development in Yehuda and Shomron, arguing that new communities in the region could both strengthen the Jewish presence there and provide a potential solution to the severe housing shortage facing the Chareidi community.
Maoz made the comments during a visit to the Chareidi community of Mitzpe Leah in Binyamin, where he met with the community’s founder, Rav Ephraim Hershkowitz, as well as local residents.
During the visit, Maoz was briefed on plans to expand Chareidi settlement throughout Yehuda and Shomron and heard about infrastructure and development challenges currently facing the community.
Rav Hershkowitz described the establishment of Mitzpe Leah and its growth over the years. He also discussed cooperation between the Chareidi residents and members of other communities living in the surrounding area.
Maoz toured Mitzpe Leah, visited its shul and spoke with residents about daily life in the community. Residents raised the need for greater assistance from government ministries and local authorities to enable the community to continue developing.
Maoz said expanding Chareidi communities in Yehuda and Shomron could accomplish two objectives simultaneously: strengthening Jewish settlement in the region while opening additional and potentially more affordable housing opportunities for Chareidi families.
“Chareidi settlement in Yehuda and Shomron is important for safeguarding Eretz Yisroel and can also serve as a solution to the Chareidi housing crisis,” Maoz said.
At the conclusion of his visit, Maoz urged local authorities throughout Yehuda and Shomron “to open the door and assist the development of Chareidi settlement in every possible way.”
“Just as the Torah belongs to all of Klal Yisroel, so too Eretz Yisroel belongs to all of Klal Yisroel, and settling it is both a privilege and a responsibility of all sectors,” Maoz said.
Maoz added that his party intends to work with the relevant government officials and agencies to advance the continued development of Mitzpe Leah and facilitate further expansion of Chareidi communities throughout the region.
