US President Joe Biden announced Thursday that the American military mission in Afghanistan will end on August 31, nearly 20 years after it began.

The US military has “achieved” its goals in the country to degrade Al-Qaeda and prevent more attacks on the United States.

“We did not go to Afghanistan to nation-build,” he said in a speech.

The leader has expressed confidence in the Afghan military and said that a Taliban takeover of the country is not inevitable.

“I do not trust the Taliban,” Biden told reporters at the White House, “but I trust the capacity of the Afghan military.”

Asked if a Taliban takeover was “inevitable,” the president said “No, it is not.”
