A shocking incident unfolded in New York City on Tuesday, as a man was pushed onto the subway tracks and narrowly avoided death when he was struck by a train. The horrifying attack, which was captured on video, took place in broad daylight, but the victim miraculously survived, only sustaining a head injury.
At around 1:30 p.m. at the 18th Street station, a 45-year-old man found himself in the midst of an unprovoked assault. A hooded attacker shoved him onto the tracks, but against all odds, the victim managed to escape the ordeal with his life. Authorities are now questioning a person of interest in connection with this cowardly act.
One law enforcement official commented on the miraculous nature of the victim’s survival, saying, “By God’s own hand, he fell perfectly in the trench.” The victim was reported to be in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital later that evening.
Footage from the scene, obtained by The Post, shows the assailant pacing near the platform’s edge while the victim stands distracted, seemingly looking at his phone as the train approaches. Without warning, the attacker shoves the man, causing him to fall under the train.
Seconds before the incident, two individuals are seen jumping over the turnstile, rushing out of the station upon witnessing the horrifying scene unfold before them. It appears that the victim had no prior interaction with his assailant, according to police.
Violet Paley, who was on the train, described the chaos that followed the attack. “The subway stopped abruptly, then we waited for 10 minutes, confused,” she said. “Then the conductor said over the intercom that we were going to have to evacuate because there was a man under the train.” Paley recalled, “We walked off the subway, there were a bunch of cops and paramedics and they climbed down to get him. When they got him out I was shocked to see him blinking his eyes and moving his fingers. He was bloody.”
Dramatic video captured on the scene shows firefighters working to extricate the victim from between the subway cars, as onlookers gasp in disbelief from the platform. One bystander, visibly relieved, can be heard exclaiming, “He’s alive! He’s alive!”
The 23-year-old suspect fled the scene but was apprehended later that day near Columbus Circle, several hours after the attack. The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed as no charges have been filed yet.
The attacker, who has a history of previous encounters with the NYPD, has been arrested before. In June 2019, he was charged with assault for allegedly slamming an officer to the ground, resulting in an injury to the cop’s back. The suspect also has an open case in Brooklyn involving assault, harassment, and weapons charges from October 12. Additionally, he was released without bail in 2020 on another case, though the details of the charges remain unclear.
Tuesday’s attack is part of a disturbing trend of subway violence in New York City. In addition to the incident on the 1 train, there were two separate slashings on Sunday, and just days earlier, a man was tragically set on fire while sleeping on an F train in Brooklyn.
Kips Bay resident Tom, who was outside the 18th Street station as police investigated the attack, expressed growing concerns about subway safety. “My rule of thumb is to always avoid late-night traveling. But to hear this happened in the daytime is scary,” he said. “I’m surprised, I guess, but I’m hearing things like this happen more often.”
Recent NYPD statistics show that in the 28 days leading up to Sunday, there were 48 felony assaults in the city’s transit system, a 40% increase from the same period in 2023. This surge in violent incidents prompted the Guardian Angels to resume subway patrols for the first time since 2020.
The Guardian Angels, a group founded by Curtis Sliwa in 1979, began their patrols on Sunday, with teams of three monitoring the most problematic subway lines. Mayor Eric Adams dismissed the move as “theatrics” and criticized the patrols as “meaningless stunts.” However, a representative from City Hall stated that Adams had deployed 1,000 additional police officers to patrol the subway system, resulting in a reduction in overall crime.
The uptick in subway violence has also led to Governor Kathy Hochul sending more than 1,000 National Guard members into the transit system to ensure safety.
WATCH:
This type of horrific crime will only stop when you will hang the perpetrators in middle Harlem. Lman yishmu vyrau. Success guaranteed! Just that the kind-hearted liberal care more for the vicious demons then the innocent victims.
Crime is down in our subway system. Please keep voting for me. Don’t worry. Letitia James and I will still nail the white supremacist President Donald Trump.
Rav Avigdor Miller:
“Don’t think that gentiles don’t suffer from gentiles. I’ll tell you a little secret. The gentiles suffer more from gentiles than Jews suffer from gentiles. It’s a fact; only we pay no attention.”
Ratio-wize it’s only common sense.
Thank you to all the Jews in certain places who voted in this piece of garbage ,Kathy, who LOVES crime. And now congestion pricing starts . Stop voting in garbage. ( Chucky has to go also) I pray the man gets well. The garbage who did this horrible crime should be put to death. PERIOD.
If this is another “mental health patient” then an investigation in Charlene McCray’s billion dollar public fund embezzlement must happen immediately. Where is Lander and James for this investigation?
“Seconds before the incident, two individuals are seen jumping over the turnstile, rushing out of the station upon witnessing the horrifying scene unfold before them.”
Huh? Time warp? They jumped the turnstile seconds before the incident upon witnessing it before it even happened?
Maniac??? No, this looks like gang member initiation!!!
