Starting Monday, the 2,000-plus speed cameras installed across New York City will start ticketing motorists 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, Staten Island Advance reports.

The city’s school zone speed camera program has come a long way since it was first enacted in 2013 and implemented in 2014, when only 20 mobile camera units were ticketing strictly during weekday school hours.

In June 2013, state lawmakers passed a bill authorizing New York City to establish a five-year pilot program allowing for the operation of 20 mobile speed camera units in school zones in an effort to reduce speeding and bolster traffic safety. The cameras, which issue $50 tickets to motorists exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour, were only allowed to be placed within a quarter-mile of a school along an abutted street and could only operate during school activities.

On June 24, 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul officially signed the bill to extend and expand the city’s speed camera program until July 2025, allowing for 24/7 operation of the cameras.

  1. The Torah commands us to respect our big brother.

    כבד את אביך

את לרבות אחיך הגדול, כדברי חז”ל

  2. The Democrat, liberal, leftist, wokeist love to couch their twist agenda in lofty and feel-good terms (sic) You won’t find them using the word car accident anymore now it’s car violence. Well, if you say it like that of course you need camaras 24/7. We must stop those aggressive, gas guzzling monsters. Of course, there is no mention of banning those dangerous e-bikes and scooters that do whatever they please on our streets. There is no mention of outreach to pedestrians who play Russian roulette with cars as they cross against the light while being distracted on their cell phones.

    • There are too many car lanes, cars get free parking on public streets, they already have much more than their fair share.

Cars/minivans/SUV’s/trucks… are by far the most dangerous machines on the streets.

      • Yes. We must go back to horse and buggy. We have to make room for the horses to take a dump and hire city workers to pick up their dung. Will there be tickets given for horses that double park?

  3. The energy, combustion, and atmosphere , have gone out of New York especially Brooklyn like fizzle.. probably they are many reasons for it, but this is one

Regulations and speed cameras for traffic have intangible long term effects that are hard to measure but are felt extensively afterwards.

So does it accomplish something ? They give useless Council members cheap gimmicking they are doing something and simplistic shallow constituents are for it.

  4. A 99 year old Jewish woman just passed away after being hit by a station wagon in Riverdale this past Wednesday morning, at around 8:30 AM. How long will the carnage continue?

This is a good start, but much more needs to be done to make the streets safer.
