Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s landmark visit to Israel next month has been set for September 2-5, his government said Monday, nearly two years after he sparked outrage by likening his deadly drug war to the Holocaust.
The visit will mark the first-ever trip to Israel by a Filipino leader since diplomatic ties were established between the two countries in 1967, a foreign department statement said.
According to the statement, Duterte and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will discuss how to develop ties on issues including security and counter-terrorism. The two governments are also hoping to clinch deals on air traffic, combating drug trafficking, and agricultural co-operation, according to Ynet.
