End All Restrictions, They Were Unnecessary, Hebrew University Researchers Say

Israel should end all coronavirus restrictions and reopen the country to international travel, according to a Hebrew University research team that includes a prominent epidemiologist and two finance professors, Times of Israel reports.

They crunched statistics from around the world and concluded in a newly published study that while lockdowns were necessary in London, New York and various other places, Israel didn’t need to confine people to houses or impose other strict rules.

Though researchers admitted that without those limitations, Israel’s death toll would have been higher, even significantly so, they believed it would have stayed within manageable rates, while protecting the economy from massive damage.

“The purpose of publishing this isn’t to criticize what was done,” Prof. David Gershon, an economist with the Jerusalem Business School at Hebrew University, told The Times of Israel. “It isn’t political, but it raises the question of why we are still in semi-lockdown. Why are we keeping the cemeteries closed on Memorial Day? It shows that there’s an overreaction.” Read more at Times of Israel.

  1. A “MANAGEABLE” death toll????
These are words spoken by YIDDEN?

R’ Chaim Brisker knew what he was talking about. V’hameivin yavin.

  2. ‘Though researchers admitted that without those limitations, Israel’s death toll would have been higher, even significantly so, they believed it would have stayed within manageable rates, while protecting the economy from massive damage.’
Um, ok, so now we know their priorities. Economy comes before lives. Stupid and shameful.

  3. “Though researchers admitted that without those limitations, Israel’s death toll would have been higher, even significantly so”

I’m sorry is this a religious website?

You offer inane criticism of many news stories but this one you opost with no comment?

  4. Sure, it’s “an overreaction”. Why? Because only a few extra people will die.
    Got it.
It’s nice to know they’re willing to take responsibility for those deaths.
Maybe they should listen to the recordings from the Stoliner and Sanzer Rebbes posted on Matzav the last few days.

What are “manageable rates”? The article goes on to concede that they would have been similar to Sweden over 2,000 deaths and counting versus the 200 in Eretz Yisroel. And no as of this writing Sweden still does not have “herd immunity” like the anti restriction advocates told us they would, The still have more deaths and confirmed cases than similar countries

    • I don’t get the posters who are unhappy that this article was posted without a condemnation by matzav.

While I read it, I was disgusted all on my own, with my own brain. Why do you need a news site to tell you how to think, within a news article? Are you afraid to think for yourself?

Also, those who say zionism is not interested in saving lives are just promulgating hate. There are SOME Zionists who don’t value lives. There are plenty of anti-Zionists who don’t value lives either. Have you heard of Hamas?

  6. I don’t get the comments. Yes, the Zionists don’t care about lives. But that is not relevant here. The researchers don’t think that the lockdowns will save lives in the long run.

That’s because the lockdown (as it’s being done now) is only expected to delay the spread of the disease. Will that save lives?

The question is if the “cure” is worse than the disease.

  7. Based on everyone’s logic here we should ban using cars because they cause death, or do we realize that in order for us to live normal lives and have a functioning economy we need cars I think it’s all the scientists were saying

  8. This piece should have been part of a scathing criticism of Zionism very appropriately posted at this time – the perfect exposé for what happens when Torah values are traded for nationalism and economics. This is consistent with the original Zionist attitude as per Zionist leader (later Minister of Interior) Yitzchak Gruenbaum who is quoted as saying during WWII when asked about allocating money to save European Jews:
“One cow in Palestine is worth more than all the Jews in Europe.”
    and
“I think it is necessary to state here – Zionism is above everything. I will not demand that the Jewish Agency allocate a sum of 300,000 or 100,000 pounds sterling to help European Jewry. And I think that whoever demands such things is performing an anti-Zionist act.”
I am incredulous and horrified that Matzav posted this article by itself with no comment, as if it is a legitimate view.

  9. I wonder how they would feel if those manageable rates included them or their family members.
This mentality is similar to those Hamas leaders who send yenem’s child to be a martyr.

These people are the Erev Rav.

  10. Lockdowns don’t save a single life. The deaths will continue with or without the lockdown, until “herd immunity” is reached. The only thing that lockdowns do achieve, is spreading the deaths over a few months period. That what the poorly chosen word “managaeble” in the article meant: as manageable to the health system – that is the health system not collapsing from the sheer number of incoming patients. And the article states that even with all loses concentrated in 1 month instead of 5, the health system can still keep up. Non native English-speaking Israelis would just be better off not trying to make any public announcements.
The only life saving strategy is to strictly isolate the vulnerable, and unleash the healthy people, so that they can get infected, recover, and achieve immunity. Once 70% of the population are immune, it would be time to let the vulnerable population out. This strategy would maximize saving of lives. The total lockdown doesn’t differentiate between vulnerable and healthy, hence spreads the burden on the vulnerable, which results in their deaths.

  11. The gemora in Brochose indicates that parnoso for the klal is worth losing lives over. Dovid asked H’ what he should do as the klal needs parnoso. H’ answered, “start a war “
