Harvard University concealed a high-level inquiry into allegations of plagiarism against its controversial president, deploying an expensive law firm to intimidate The NY Post during its independent investigation. The college only publicly acknowledged the probe into Claudine Gay after Harvard Corporation, the university’s governing body, declared unanimous support for her, despite mounting criticism.

While Harvard stated it investigated and cleared Gay of breaching research misconduct standards, The NY Post’s inquiries revealed weeks of secrecy around the investigation. The university remained silent even when Gay faced Congress for testimony on antisemitism, disclosing the inquiry only when the governing body expressed solidarity.

The controversy surfaced after a conservative activist questioned citations in Gay’s 1997 PhD dissertation. Despite her earlier defense of academic integrity, Harvard confirmed an investigation beginning in late October, addressing allegations that emerged on social media.

The university’s statement, issued to the Harvard community, did not reveal the extent of the concealment or the involvement of aggressive legal tactics to shield Gay. The Post’s inquiry, initiated on October 24, brought attention to instances where Gay’s words closely mirrored published works by other academics.

Harvard’s senior executive director of media relations, Jonathan Swain, sought additional time to review Gay’s work but failed to respond within the promised timeframe. Instead, The Post received a 15-page letter from Thomas Clare, a prominent attorney representing Harvard and Gay, raising questions about the timing and nature of the legal intervention.

Harvard has not specified which works Gay intends to correct or whether her dissertation will undergo revisions. Despite additional queries from The Post, the university remained unresponsive.

The allegations encompassed works dating from 1993 to 2017, with The Post’s analysis revealing potential breaches in academic citation policy. Jonathan Bailey, an expert witness in plagiarism cases, indicated policy violations and urged a comprehensive examination.

Comments from academics whose work Gay allegedly cited without proper attribution varied. Some, like George Reid Andrews, acknowledged borrowing but considered it within acceptable limits, while others, like Anne Williamson, perceived it as plagiarism and emphasized the importance of proper citation.
