Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich asserted that “there are 2 million Nazis” in the West Bank, citing recent polls indicating Palestinian support for Hamas’s October 7 attacks in southern Israel. Israeli officials have drawn parallels between the ideology behind these attacks, resulting in 1,200 deaths and ongoing conflict, and the Nazi worldview during the Holocaust.
Responding to questions from The Times of Israel on budget changes directing NIS 390 million ($105 million) for West Bank security, Smotrich, a far-right figure, stated, “There are 2 million Nazis in Judea and Samaria, who hate us exactly as do the Nazis of Hamas-ISIS in Gaza.”
Smotrich seemingly alluded to recent surveys showing about two-thirds of West Bank Palestinians supporting the October 7 attacks. With an estimated 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank, the potential impact of Smotrich’s comments looms large.
