A 97-year-old woman was convicted by a German court today of contributing to the murder of over 11,000 people while she worked as a typist at a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Irmgard Furchner, who worked at the Stutthof camp near Gdansk in what is now Poland between 1943 and 1945, was given a two-year suspended sentence, according to local media reports. The ruling was made under juvenile law on account of the fact that Furchner was just 18 when the crimes took place.

Furchner’s trial was delayed last year when she tried to go on the run but was caught within hours of not showing up in court. Estimates suggest that as many as 65,000 people died in the Stutthof camp during the Holocaust. Read more.

  1. The ruling was made under juvenile law on account of the fact that Furchner was just 18 when the crimes took place.

Why under juvenile laws? Did she have any sympathy for the thousands of innocent children she was helping murder?

  2. At least President Putin is doing something worthwhile. He’s eradicating the Nazis who went into hiding in Ukraine after the Holocaust.

  3. Not sure what they want from a 97 year old lady. The prosecutor(s) who let her live free all these years should be on trial for allowing it

  4. When asked how she felt about being given a suspended sentence, Furchner told reporters: “Well, I can’t complain because the murdered victims in the concentration camps never got a suspended sentence, so I’d like to thank the judge for treating me better than I treated the victims.”
“When asked if she agreed with the rationale of being sentenced under juvenile law due to the fact that she was aged between 18 and 19 at the time, Furchner said: “Not really. Because in Germany, retailers are permitted to sell cigarettes to anyone who is eighteen years of age and older. Moreover, it wasn’t long ago when the legal age was 16. But I suppose the judge felt there’s a huge difference between murdering people and smoking. The judge apparently is of the opinion that 18-year olds who murder Jews, are considered juvenile murderers, whereas 18-year olds who smoke, are considered adult smokers.”
“I’m not sure if I understand the logic behind that,” she conceded, “but it definitely works for me, and that’s all that matters for me right now.”
“I’m just breathing a sigh of relief right now,” Furchner added, “which is something the gas chamber victims never had a chance to experience.”
