Israeli Religious Affairs Minister Matan Kahana was lambasted after tapes emerged in which he explained his anger at Tzfas Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyohu for pronouncing a huge shipment of broccoli as bug infested.

“There cannot be a situation where broccoli from one field is kosher for one factory and not kosher for another factory because one local rov is machshir and another local rov is not,” Kahana said. “As long as I am minister of religious affairs, I am not prepared to have a business lose millions; this cannot happen.”

It is thought the incident prompted Kahana to instruct elections for a new Tzfas chief rabbi.

“Day by day, Kahana is revealed as a superficial and dangerous populist,” Betzalel Smotrich of Religious Zionism said in response. “To prevent a factory from losing money, Matan Kahana will appoint a rav mitaam (a term used for Czarist appointed rabbinic functionaries) to give hechsherim to non-kosher food, mislead the kosher community, and make them eat worms and bugs.

  1. Kahana is a Religious Minister like Horowitz is a Health Minister. Kahana’s religion is obvious not based on the Jewish religion and what Horowitz’ Health Ministry is completely based on Fizer / Big Pharma / WHO, no medical degree needed, just wickedness and heartlessness?
