Hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, dubbed “the Butcher of Tehran,” was sworn in Thursday as Iran’s president, in a parliamentary ceremony broadcast live on state television.
Raisi, who is under US sanctions over multiple atrocities he oversaw throughout his career in the Iranian judiciary, has pledged to take diplomatic steps to lift punishing US sanctions against the Islamic Republic that have cut Iran’s oil exports and have shut it out of the international banking system.
