The Israel Defense Forces announced late on Saturday it conducted an aerial operation in Syria targeting Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps to thwart a major planned drone attack on Israel.
The announcement, confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Twitter, came following reports in Syrian state media that anti-aircraft defenses fired at ‘enemy targets’ over Damascus.
“The strike targeted Iranian Quds Force operatives and Shiite militias which were preparing to advance attack plans targeting sites in Israel from within Syria over the last number of days,” the IDF statement read.
“The thwarted attack included plans to launch a number of armed drones intended to be used to strike Israeli sites.”
