Official state figures showed on Tuesday that some 180,000 Holocaust survivors were living in Israel at the end of 2020.

At the beginning of the same year, at least 192,000 Holocaust survivors were counted by the bureau, which included for the first time Jews from North Africa and the Middle East who were victims of persecution linked to the Nazis.

According to the office, there were 14.8 million Jews in the world in 2019, 1.8 million fewer than in 1939 on the eve of World War II, and 3.3 million more than in 1948.

Israel remains the country with the largest number of Jews in the world (6.8 million), followed by the United States (5.7 million), France (448,000), and Canada (393,000).

Israel will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day on Wednesday evening, 80 years after the start of the Holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis.
