  1. “the Vilna Gaon, whose was niftar 300 years ago.”

The Vilna Gaon was not niftar 300 years ago! He was niftar on Chol Hamoed Sukkos of 1797, a little over 223 years ago.

Rather, he was born 300 years ago, in 1720.

  2. “Despite the amount of time passed, the Gra continues to be a legendary figure in the country, and is revered for his brilliance by Jew and non-Jew alike.”

If the GR”A is so revered there, why is Lithuania planning to build a convention center on the site of the Shnipishok cemetery in Vilna where the GR”A was buried, and where remains of many members of his family and other Vilna Jews were interred and remain?

Inexpensive token gestures, like this coin, though they are nice, need to be combined with concrete, more substantive actions, if they want to bear more weight.

      • They want Jewish tourism and other economic benefits they think they could get from a better image vis-a-vis and better relations with the Jewish people.

      • Not at all. They’re sucking away our cash from us in offering this coin- people’s comments here already include QA where to purchase these. We should boycott. A great way for one of us to remember or commemorate the Vilna Gaon is to learn his seforim, not get duped into Lithuanian govt fundraiser.

        • I have no spare money, so it makes no difference whether I boycott it or not. Also I have no expertise in coins. I would think those who do buy it do so as an investment, as opposed to a gift to the Lithuanian government and people.

  3. Yet they refuse to admit their guilt in killing Jews during WWII. When the Nazis y”sh invaded Lithuania, the Lithuanian people didn’t wait for them to kill their Jewish neighbors. They did it themselves, with iron clubs in the streets. That’s why from all countries in Europe where Jews lived, the highest percentage of Jews killed is Lithuania. Hashem Yikom Damom.

  4. the coin is sold on ebay over a thousand dollars, ans as much as 2000. the state bank of lithuania minted 2500 coins for 62 euros, perhaps we should look into coin collecting!
