Shas party leader Aryeh Deri has warned that he will push for new elections unless a law regulating the army draft status of yeshiva students is passed within two months. Meanwhile, the Degel Hatorah faction of the United Torah Judaism party opted for a more measured approach on Wednesday evening in an effort to de-escalate tensions.

Deputy Minister Uri Maklev spoke at an annual transportation conference, asserting that “The government is stable and it has overcome not-so-simple challenges. There are those who want it to fall, but that won’t happen.”

He added that neither the media, the Attorney General, nor political figures like Yair Lapid and Yair Golan could bring down the current government. “Neither the commentators, nor the Attorney General, nor Yair Lapid, nor Yair Golan will bring down the government,” he declared.

The crisis deepened when Deri remarked on Tuesday during an interview with Kol Barama radio that if the draft law is not passed within two months, he would push to dissolve the Knesset.

Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich weighed in on Wednesday morning, suggesting in the Knesset that if an agreement on the draft law cannot be reached, “it would be right to pass the 2025 budget and then dissolve the Knesset.”

In response, Shas quickly issued a clarification, emphasizing that they did not intend to bring down a right-wing government.

Maklev also highlighted the importance of unity, noting, “The secret to our existence, even in tough times, has been and will always be the unity of the Jewish people. When we were united – we triumphed. It’s in our hands.”

  1. Deri is a whining oversized toddler.Who caused this situation? The bagatz.
So when others were recently going after that Bagatz for your sake, would you help them out?
Only until it would as usual matter? What keeps you backstabbing your allies for any issue of real substance?
A thick private dossier that Shabak has over you & yours?
