Mr. Meir Mishel Azruel z”l, Noted Moroccan Philanthropist

On Shabbos, Mr. Meir Mishel Azruel z”l, a noted Moroccan philanthropist, passed away in Yerushalayim. He was 99.

Mr. Azruel was called the “Montefiore of Moroccan Judaism” for the past 30 years. He lived for the past two years in the Lady Stern Hotel on Rechov Yaffo in Yerushalayim that he owned.

He was born in Morocco, and his family received the brocha of the Abir Yaakov, Rav Yaakov Abuchatzeirah, and over the generations received the brocha of the Baba Sali for arichas yomim.

Mr. Azruel was a noted supporter of Torah and chesed and used his wealth to help yeshivos and tzedakah organizations.

He famously renovated the tziyun of Rav Avraham Abuchatzeirah in Tiveriah and the mikvah of Shemaya and Avtalion in the north. Every year, on the yahrtzeit of Rav Yitzchak Abuchatzeirah in Morocco, Mr. Azruel would host the thousands of visitors to the kever at his own expense.

His son, Amram (Armond) Azruel, who was known as a great Torah supporter as well, passed away last year.

He leaves behind his family, including his sons, Yaakov, Eliyahu, and Avraham.

The levayah is being held today, followed by kevurah on Har Hamenuchos.
