Authorities are investigating a shooting at a high school in Perry, Iowa, that left multiple people wounded Thursday morning.
Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said there were “multiple victims” but would not confirm the number of people injured or the extent of the injuries. He said investigators have identified the shooter and that there is no further danger to the public.
Two hospitals confirmed that they had received patients from the shooting, but few other details were immediately available.
President Biden is “tracking the tragic school shooting” news as senior White House staff members keep in touch with Iowa officials, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
“It’s only the fourth day in the year, in the new year, and we are already faced with yet another horrific school shooting. And the question that we ask is, when will enough be enough?” Jean-Pierre said.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) said she was also monitoring the situation. She said she was in contact with law enforcement and would join a news conference Thursday afternoon.
“Our hearts are broken by this senseless tragedy,” she wrote on X. “Our prayers are with the students, teachers & families of the Perry Community.”
The “active shooter” situation was reported at 7:37 a.m. local time on the first day of the school’s second semester, according to Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante. The sheriff said the school day had not yet started, which meant that fewer people were in the building at the time of the shooting. Agents from the FBI Omaha Des Moines resident agency were on the scene and assisting local law enforcement, according to a statement from the Department of Justice. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has also responded. Attorney General Merrick Garland has been briefed on the incident, the Department of Justice said.
Perry Elementary School will be closed Friday, according to a midday post on Facebook on Thursday. The post on the City of Perry page, added that anyone with children in the Perry School District should be aware. The Des Moines Area Community College said its center in Perry would also be closed through the weekend.
It was not immediately clear if other nearby districts would also close schools Friday.
