In the last few hours a process has begun in which 957 prisoners were released from the prisons and detention facilities in which they are held.

These are criminal prisoners who have been sentenced to up to four years in prison, and the Israel Prison Service (IPS) has decided to shorten their sentences as administrative shortfalls, because of overcrowding and poor prison conditions.

A High Court ruling in 2017 stated that the state must provide minimal living space for every detainee in the detention facilities.

The state understood that it had no possibility of changing the existing conditions within this period of time, and therefore had no choice but to release some of the prisoners and thereby make room for the rest.

  1. If they’ll release all the innocent prisoners who were tortured by the Shin-Daled to confess to crimes they never committed, there’d be plenty of room.
