Democratic leaders say they remain hopeful a toeivah marriage bill will get through the New Jersey Legislature. The bill’s sponsors abruptly pulled the measure from a vote in the Senate rather than see it defeated today.
Gov. Jon Corzine says the delay allows more time for debate. Corzine says he remains confident the legislation will “get to a positive conclusion” before he leaves office in January.
Corzine has said he would sign a toeivah marriage law. Gov.-elect Chris Christie would veto it.
Outgoing Senate President Dick Codey says he’s disappointed today’s debate was postponed.
New Jersey Family Policy Council president Len Deo says the delay shows that toeivah rights advocates are diminished.
