New York City’s speed cameras have ticketed 70 percent more drivers since they’ve been able to stay on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, according to new data from the city, StreetsBlog NYC reports.

According to an analysis of the city’s Open Parking and Camera Violations numbers by Jehiah Czebotar, there were 513,777 camera-issued speeding tickets during a three-week period between Aug. 1 and Aug. 21 — roughly 211,000, or 70 percent, more compared to a similar three-week period between July 11 and July 31, when the cameras were only active five days a week and between 6 am and 10 pm.

The cameras were turned on 24/7 on August 1, and during the first three weeks of August, the city’s 750 camera systems in school zones issued 332,464 tickets during weekdays, and 181,313 during weekends. On Shabbosos and Sundays between 6 am and 10 pm, there were 142,240 tickets issued, and between 10pm and 6 am, there were 39,073.

“The data confirms what we already knew: drivers are excessively speeding at night and on weekends when cameras were turned off,” said Czebotar, a software engineer who is also a data analyst and safe-street advocate, according to StreetsBlog NYC.

  1. Yes. Get those “criminals”. But the people who throw others onto train track and kill and steal, leave them alone. They are our honorable citizens.

  2. Great in general, and also the timing is so great.

People can now be more motivated to do teshuvah for driving sins before Rosh Hashanah.

    How fortunate we are.

  3. Speed cameras are there for making the city extra money and don’t do anything regarding the issue.

As a rule, speeding does NOT ’cause’ accidents. Of course, if you’re going 60 on a residential street, or trying to take on a hairpin turn at 90, speeding probably will cause the crash. But the actual speed is not the cause, it’s the distracted, selfish, aggressive, obnoxious, incompetent (pick any) who is the cause. Speeding just intensifies the damage.
More crashes are caused due to people running red lights, not keeping their distance, or swerving without signaling. but apart from the red light issue, distance keeping is not something that can be automatically enforced and ticketed and neither is failure to signal, so speed traps it is.

If they were really interested in preventing accidents, speed bumps in school zones do a much better job. All it takes is one time for you to bash your head on the roof of your car and hear your bumpers scrape on the road and you’ll never speed over one of those again.
